By the time congestion makes the news, the cost is already booked: vessels at anchor burning time and fuel, missed berthing windows cascading through schedules, cargo owners discovering their ETA was fiction. But ports rarely jam without warning. The signals are visible in AIS data days before the queue forms - if you know which ones to watch.
The leading indicators
Anchorage inflow. The count of vessels arriving at anchor - and how long they sit - leads berth congestion by days. A rising trend against the port's seasonal baseline is the single earliest warning.
Dwell-time tail. Median port stay moves late; the 90th percentile moves first. When the slowest calls start stretching while the median holds, the port is losing its buffer capacity.
Berth utilization. Ports run comfortably below full utilization because arrival timing is noisy. As utilization climbs toward its ceiling, every disruption - weather, a labor action, one slow vessel - converts directly into queue time.
Punctuality erosion upstream. Congestion propagates along rotations: when arrivals into a port get less punctual across many carriers at once, the cause usually sits one or two calls earlier in the loop.
Turning signals into decisions
The point of early warning is the cheap decision it enables. With days of notice, a shipment can be routed over an alternative gateway, a transshipment rebooked before the connection breaks, an ETA re-buffered while customers can still adjust. With hours of notice, all that remains is apologizing.
The hard part is baseline context: seven vessels at anchor is routine at one port and a crisis at another, and the same port has different norms in January and July.
